SIFFO FISH – Somali Integrated Fisheries and Forestry Organization is a national non-profit organization dedicated to restoring, protecting, and sustainably managing Somalia’s marine and forest ecosystems. We operate at the nexus of biodiversity conservation, climate resilience, and the blue economy, empowering coastal and rural communities to thrive through ecosystem-based solutions.Our work addresses critical environmental threats, including plastic pollution, illegal fishing, coastal erosion, and the degradation of mangrove forests, seagrass beds, and other sensitive habitats that support marine life such as dugongs, sea turtles, and coastal bird species.We actively lead community beach cleaning campaigns, raise awareness on the dangers of marine debris and microplastics, and advocate for sustainable fishing and waste management practices that protect ocean health

This is a generic article you cOn 2 August 2025, a dead humpback whale was found washed ashore at Kibora Beach, Kismayo, southern Somalia. Local residents gathered at the site—some observing the rare sighting, while others searched the carcass for ambergris. This incident follows earlier incident this year where whale strandings reported along the Somali coast, including cases in Bosaso, Puntland. The recurrence of such events suggests a concerning trend, though the exact causes remain unclear. Somalia, with the longest coastline on mainland Africa (over 3,300 km along the Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Aden), hosts a rich diversity of marine life, including whales, dolphins, sea turtles, dugongs, and many fish species. Coastal communities depend heavily on these marine resources for their livelihoods, making such strandings both ecologically significant and of great concern to local communities.
